Troubled Sarah Harding's rollercoaster career: Girls Aloud meltdowns, boozy rows and heartbreak

Sarah Harding meltdowns - her rollercoaster life

Sarah Harding has sparked fears amongst fans after being savaged by critics for her performance in Ghost the Musical.

The singer and actress - who got her big break when Popstars: The Rivals led to a hugely successful decade as part of Girls Aloud - was replaced by an understudy during the Blackpool show on Monday .
It comes after a rollercoaster few years for the star, who has worked through heartbreak, criticism, bands ending and a stint in rehab since she became a household name.
Now, Sarah is said to be on powerful painkillers for an injury picked up in Channel 4’s The Jump in February.
A source said: “Everyone’s telling her she needs to take a break and get her head together. But she won’t.”
Here is a look back on her life and career.

Popstars: The Rivals and Girls Aloud

Sarah shot to stardom alongside Girls Aloud bandmates Cheryl, Kimberley Walsh, Nicola Roberts and Nadine Coyle in 2002, becoming one of the biggest bands in the UK

The band's debut album Sound of the Underground went straight to Number 2 in the charts, while fourth record Tangled Up also broke into the Top 5.
Their last studio LP Out of Control was released in 2008 and gave them their first chart topping full length, while all but two of their 23 singles were in the Top 10.

By 2009, the group came to an end - before reuniting in 2012 for their 10th anniversary and splitting for a second time as Sarah was battling alcohol problems.

Short lived engagement to Tom Crane

In January 2011, she got engaged to DJ Tom Crane after around four years together - but by the September they had called it off after a number of rows.

It left her emotional, and it was later confirmed there would be no chance of a reunion of their romance.
"Our lives had started to go in different directions," she admitted. "We'd become like passing ships."

Rehab for alcohol dependency and depression

A month after the breakup, Sarah decided to get treatment for her issues after boozy rows with her ex, and went to rehab.
She got help for depression and alcohol dependence, and later revealed the treatment was also for her addiction to sleeping pills.

Rehab was a depressing place to be with a lot of troubled people. I came off Zopiclone. I started taking them four years ago and coming off them was horrible," she said after leaving.
"It took three weeks in rehab to start sleeping normally again."

Meeting Theo De Vries and their difficult romance

While at the rehab centre in Cape Town, Sarah met boyfriend Theo De Vries, who was battling an addiction to cocaine.
However, the relationship came to an end after a violent row in their hotel room on New Year's Day in 2012.

Speaking at the time, she said: "This has just messed me up again, because I'm sleeping terrible hours again. My smoking has also got a lot worse."
She then decided to get help, after admitting she "wasn't in a good state" after turning back to booze and partying.

Driving ban and another romance comes to an end

In April 2013, Sarah was handed a driving ban after talking on her mobile phone while driving through London.
She had already got nine points on her license from a speeding incident, and while she argued public transport would be difficult because of her celebrity status, this was overuled.

Critics slam Corrie and Ghost the Musical

In 2015, Sarah joined the cast of Coronation Street for four episodes as Joni Preston, but viewers were disappointed.
While she was only ever contracted for four episodes as a cameo, it was reported at the time that her performances meant she would not be making a return.
Most recently, she pulled out of a performance of Ghost the Musical - which has come under heavy criticism too - during the interval, with understudy Kelly Hampson replacing her at Blackpool's Winter Gardens.

Her rep refused to confirm the reason, but a source told The Sun Online she had been taking powerful painkillers to help a knee injury and ended up slurring and stumbling through a clay wheel scene.
The 34-year-old star had only returned to the show a month ago in September after being diagnosed with an upper respiratory tract infection which took her six days to get over.
