So, why the headline?
By now you've probably heard what Hillary Clinton said at a fundraiser on Friday. Just in case you hadn't, here is the quote that is creating controversy:
"To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables," Clinton said. "Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it."
She added, "And unfortunately, there are people like that and he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people, now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric."
First, I do applaud her for saying "grossly generalistic" before throwing out a "grossly generalistic" insult to millions of people.
I believe in what she is saying here. The conversation from Donald Trump has been mean-spirited and full of hate. I don't even watch him anymore, because he sheds light on the truth of which Clinton speaks.
Yes, she was telling the truth.
The problem I have with this is she shouldn't have said it at all.
Today, she even realized it and admitted she shouldn't have said all she said. Whether or not it was the pressure put on her means very little to me. At least she came out and apologized. Beyond politics, I think she knows why she was wrong to say it.
We spend a lot of time teaching young kids to turn the other way, to do unto others, to not be the bully. We teach them kindness over meanness. I tell my kids daily to never stoop to "that girl's" level. Believe me, both of my girls have dealt with plenty of mean girls in their short lives.
Do I want them to tell those girls off? YES! Do I want to personally tell them off? YES!
I can feel some eyes rolling as I say the next line. I am only continuing the hate and sending the spiral on a continuous spin if I let them react in this way.
Also, every single time, it will give the other person the power. You have allowed them to turn you into them.
I will not argue her point. In fact, I think she "grossly UNDERestimated" the number according to some statistics.
My beef is not with the facts.
I am not going to support the action of stooping to Trump's level.
Don't get me wrong. I support her. Did I mention she is the most qualified candidate? How about her track record on helping others? I will vote for her.
However, being her supporter does not mean we have to condone something we absolutely hate from the other side.
The Golden Rule, the Bible, the Buddhist principals, etc., all back me up here.
Don't judge others. Do good. It is that simple.
