Billions of European super-fleas with massive penises are preparing to invade bedrooms across the country this autumn.
The invasive breed, which has a penis which is two-and-a-half times the length of its body, is believed to have reached UK shores from the continent in past few years.
Their male genitalia is the largest in the world, relative to the size of any bug.
Following last year’s mild winter and perfect breeding conditions this summer the well-endowed insects are soon due to emerge from hibernation en mass.
Rob Simpson, of pest control group Basis Prompt, said: “Fleas which would usually remain dormant for much longer, became active sooner, leading to more prolific breeding and therefore a larger population.”
Sales of flea bite cream have surged according to pharmacists.
According to experts flea bites typically appear as red spots and are very itchy and a most commonly found on the feet and legs.
Doctors say bites should be washed with soap and water and then an antiseptic cream should be administered to the affected area.
Painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen and an antihistamine cream can be used if the bite is painful or swollen.
The pesky bugs can get into homes on the backs of household pets like cats and dogs.
